New weight loss support group forms in Bland

Bland County resident Randy Kiser is on a weight loss journey and wants to help others like himself with support and information. He and his wife, Goldie, have organized a weight loss support group called Supportive Team Reaching Our Nutritional Goals, or STRONG.

The group met for the first time Monday with nine participants. The group’s emphasis is on people who have underlying medical conditions that may require different approaches to weight loss. Lisa Sarver is also helping facilitate the group.

During Monday’s meeting, Randy talked about his health history and how he finally got serious about losing weight. Since the summer, he has lost 65 pounds.

“It’s mainly watching my fluids and dieting and a little activity,” he said, adding that he has found support through Facebook groups like Nutty Buddies.

“We were pleased with the turnout,” Randy said. “They were excited. They were there for different reasons, some were there for health reasons and some were there for preventative reasons because there are health problems in their family they want to avoid. Others just wanted to lose weight and some were there for support.”

The group meets on Mondays at the Bland County Library. Optional weigh-in and social time is from 5 to 6 p.m. The meeting will run from 6 to 7 p.m. The Kisers have planned programs through May. After that, members will determine the group’s direction. Some options include a private Facebook support page, continuing to meet once a week or meeting once a month.

The speaker for Monday’s meeting will be Colleen Groves, nutritionist at the Bland County Medical Clinic. During her presentation, she will discuss food journals and answer nutrition questions.

“There’s no cookie-cutter approach to weight loss,” Goldie said. “You need to keep trying different things and try not to get frustrated when something works so well for others but not you.”

STRONG is planning several group activities like walking and yoga.

“But the best part of the group is going to be the support we can give each other on our journey,” Goldie said.
