Greene County, NC (WITN) - A local craft brewery is bringing a light craft beer to Eastern Carolina in a big way.
Uptown Brewing Company's BrewMaster, Benjamin Self, is expanding into Greene County to produce "Billy Beer" for regional distribution in local grocery stores, starting this fall.
It's 3.2% ABV and Self calls it "super drinkable."
"Its a light, crushable, low-calorie, low-carb product, naturally... we don't filter it or pastuerize it or strip anything out," Self said.
"Billy Beer" started as a pet project for the BrewMaster, who wanted to make something his boss would enjoy. The name and design are plays on the 'Billy Beer' from the 1970's, which was promoted by President Jimmy Carter's brother, Billy. The founder of Greenville's Uptown Brewing Company is Billy Dunn.
"That's what he likes to drink, you know, these easy, crushable, macro-lagers, and I was like 'if he paid for all this, I've gotta be able to make something that he can enjoy and so I sort of re-designed some of these Bud Light, Miller Lite type recipes," Self said.
Self produced the beer for Dunn and other people behind the scenes at Uptown Brewing, but it quickly gained popularity.
"I think this style is generally, geuninely, worthwhile and worth making and worth doing very well and I really think it's paid off," he now says.
Uptown Brewing Company and Billy Beer, Inc. have entered into a partnership with Greene County to build a 10,000 sq. foot production facility at at the North West Greene Industrial Park off 264-Alternate.
Self's goal is to be canning Billy Beer on site by September 1. He believes he'll have 8-10 full-time employees at the start with plans to expand the production by the end of the second year when he expects to have upwards of 20 full-time jobs.
